The Daily recently interviewed actor Adam Brody, known for his work on the television show "The O.C." Brody stars in the new film "In the Land of Women" as Carter Webb, a writer recovering from a bad breakup, opposite Meg Ryan. "In the Land of Women" opens in theaters April 20.
What was one of the most surreal moments in your career?
"I remember one time, on "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," I was filming with Brad Pitt, and he punched me in the arm. I thought it was the coolest thing."
This is your first lead. What were your impressions going in?
"It's hard work. Cameos are sort of amazing. You only go in for two days. It's more time consuming, but it's cool, too. You get more than your feet wet when you're in most of the scenes. I hadn't really had that before. You're working hard. It's more fulfilling."
What attracted you to this project, "In the Land of Women"?
"I though the script was fantastic. It's such a mature script when you see the movie. He's [Director Jon Kasdan] 25 when he did this; there's a lot of 20-something directors. He deals with a lot of adult stuff. I was really impressed by Jon."
In the future, do you plan to work in film or television?
"I'm pretty excited by film. It's not totally up to me. We'll see what happens. For right now, I wouldn't mind doing film."
What about Carter makes him a universal character?
"I don't want to say he's average. He's moderately successful, he's just looking for some answers. He gets broken up with, I think everyone can relate to that."
The film deals with saying goodbye in many ways. What was your hardest goodbye?
"I would say the show. You see them every day for four years, it was like graduation from college and saying goodbye to people. I never had any huge, hard goodbye."
You have an on-screen persona as a quick-talking nerd. Would you want to play something else?
"I would love to be an a--hole. I'd love to be a d--k. I have that side to me. I think I come off nicer than I am."
How is "In the Land of Women" different from your other projects?
"I'm in it more. It's a very non-cynical. It's a very sort of old fashioned, sweet story. It's hopeful, non-violent. I think there a lot less of that today. There aren't that many movies that have a truly positive message that are uplifting."
What has impacted your career decisions?
"It's very important to me to love what I do. It was important to me to find a career that I truly enjoy. You can find something that sort of excites you, that's half the battle of life."
