Universal Studios in fiamme

All'alba di oggi un allarme incendio ha allertato più di 300 vigili del fuoco di Los Angeles.

In fiamme una vasta area degli Universal Studios, dove sarebbero andati distrutti numerosi set cinematografici e televisivi, oltre a importantissimi cimeli per un danno che si aggirerebbe intorno ai dieci milioni di dollari.

L'incendio, che ha raggiunto in poco tempo proporzioni preoccupanti a causa della massiccia presenza di elementi infiammabili (a cominciare dal legno utilizzato per la costruzione degli edifici), ha distrutto due dei sei complessi che formano l'immenso parco.
Totalmente distrutti i set di importanti pellicole cinematografiche quali Ritorno al futuro, Psycho e King Kong, oltre ai set delle serie tv Ghost Whisperer e Desperate Housewives (Grandview e Wisteria Lane pare non esistano più), House, Monk e molti altri.

Nonostante le operazioni di spegnimento molto aggressive e l'impiego di diversi elicotteri, l'incendio ha continuato a propagarsi. A ostacolare le operazioni, accusa il Los Angeles County, la scarsa pressione dell'acqua.
Dalle autorità arrivano notizie rassicuranti sullo stato di salute del personale e dei visitatori presenti negli Universal Studios: non si contano feriti. Tuttavia, una decina di vigili del fuoco sono stati portati in ospedale dopo aver riportato piccole lesioni. Attualmente restano ignote le cause della strage.

WASHINGTON - E' stata aperta una inchiesta a Los Angeles sull'incendio avvenuto ieri ai popolari Universal Studios: la bassa pressurizzazione dell'acqua ha ritardato l'opera di soccorso dei vigili del fuoco. Si sta indagando anche sulle cause dell'incendio, che ha distrutto alcuni famosi set cinematografici, compresa la piazza e la torre orologio di 'Ritorno al Futuro' e ricostruzioni di strade di New York e del New England usate in centinaia di riprese cinematografiche e televisive. Gli Universal Studios sono stati oggi regolarmente riaperti al pubblico - sono visitati ogni giorno da oltre 25 mila turisti - nonostante i danni causati dalle fiamme che hanno bruciato l'equivalente di due isolati urbani.

Una indagine è stata avviata sulla bassa pressurizzazione del sistema idrico che ha costretto i vigili del fuoco a pompare l'acqua da alcuni laghetti all'interno della vasta proprietà (che ha una superficie di 200 ettari). "Non vi sono dubbi che i problemi siano stati aggravati dalla bassa pressione dell'acqua", ha affermato il capo dei vigili del fuoco di Los Angeles, Michael Freeman.

Le fiamme hanno distrutto decine di migliaia di copie di film e di programmi TV della Universal. Ma si trattava di duplicati ed il danno è quindi rimediabile.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - L'incendio che ha ieri ha mandato in fumo parte di alcuni set degli Universal Studios di Hollywood è stato causato accidentalmente da alcuni operai che usavano la fiamma ossidrica.

Lo hanno detto ieri ufficiali dei vigili del fuoco.

Le fiamme sono divampate prima dell'alba di domenica nella parte del lotto che ospita la scenografia usata per riprodurre lo scenario metropolitano di New York, mandando in cenere tutta l'area e arrivando a lambire il set adiacente che riproduce la piazza del Tribunale apparsa in film come "Ritorno al Futuro" e "Il buio oltre la siepe".

E' finito in cenere anche un archivio di migliaia di trasmissioni televisive e film, sebbene alcuni funzionari hanno detto che il materiale video potrebbe essere sostituito.

Le indagini, secondo quanto riferito dal capo del Los Angeles County Fire Michael Freeman, hanno evidenziato che l'incendio è stato provocato da tre operai che utilizzavano una fiamma ossidrica per ricoprire con dell'asfalto la parte superiore di un set.

mi spiace tanto perchè erano dei set veramente belli e soprattutto parte della storia del cinema americano. :pianto:

Io ho letto un po' su internet, c'era uno che c'è stato l'estate scorsa che diceva che intanto è impossibile che siano bruciati sia la piazza del municipio di ritorno al futuro che wisteria lane delle desperate perche sono lontanissimi tra loro, quindi probabilmente hanno un po' esagerato i giornalisti...

The tram crammed with tourists snaked down the hillside road and through its first highlight, the gray soundstage buildings of Universal Studios Hollywood's front lot, as the tour guide recounted famed movies shot there: "Jurassic Park," "Jarhead," "Live Free or Die Hard."

As they began to round a corner, tourists saw a red firetruck parked beside the road. A few firefighters, amazingly realistic, walked by. Around the corner entire rows of fire engines appeared.

Then the group gasped. To the left were the burned-out remains of a town square, twisted and melted metal mixed with charred piles of wood. In the distance, a few building facades still stood in the smoky air.

Fingers flew to pull out cellphones, cameras, camcorders. The normally noisy tram made its first full halt and fell silent.

"You can see the destruction left in the wake of the fire," the guide said Monday. "Some of the world's greatest firefighters descended on Universal."

Visitors applauded.

As they say in showbiz, the show must go on, and a day after a fire gutted portions of the studio, reality and illusion blended on the lot even more than usual.

As firefighters continued to hose down rubbish piles, the first tour at Universal Studios Hollywood took off after the park reopened at 10 a.m. Monday. About 130 people from around the world boarded the first tram of the morning for a 45-minute tour.

"We're going to take you right up next to the devastated part of our lot and give you a close-up," said the guide.

The guide prodded the group into action at the wreckage scene, as if it were another movie set on display. "Go ahead, by the way; use your camera equipment as you see fit," he said. "Take as many photos or video footage as you want."

The guide explained to tourists from India, Holland and Denmark that they were looking at burned facades, not actual buildings. Fires were common enough to the studios, the guide said. In fact, in the 1930s a portion of a lot had been cordoned off and set ablaze intentionally for the burning of Atlanta in "Gone With the Wind."

A few minutes later, before the tour left the fire scene, the guide thanked firefighters who brought the blaze under control Sunday night.

"Gentlemen, thanks a million."

The next stop was a simulated car explosion modeled on "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift." With each fake explosion, flames -- controlled -- burst into the air.

Pointing to the cars as radiant heat warmed the metal tram, Steven Razo, 15, of Highland Park jokingly said, "I think this is how the fire started."

Foreign tourists visiting the park for the first time marveled at how staff rebounded after the fire, mounting tours and incorporating the fire into their newly scripted narratives.

"They have arranged so quickly for people to see it the next day," said Rajaesh Gupta, 68, visiting from New Delhi.

As the tour continued, it passed a set used to film "The Color Purple." Behind the empty buildings, visitors craning their necks got a small peek of the New York City streetscape, which was reduced to piles of rubble by Sunday's blaze.

The tram proceeded to more smoldering remains, this time a house ripped apart by an airplane. Luggage was strewn about and white smoke rose from the blackened fuselage. Had a plane gone down Sunday too?

Not quite. It was a set for the Tom Cruise science fiction thriller "War of the Worlds."
