Tattling This Week: Josh Schwartz Dishes on 'The O.C.'
Already in this third season, Kirsten returned from rehab, a new school dean kicked Marissa out of Harbor High and Julie Cooper didn't get a cent after Caleb's death.
When 'The O.C.' returns later this fall, executive producer Josh Schwartz will pile on even more drama, with new characters, new settings and promises of resolving several tantalizing storylines. AOL Television editor Kelly Woo talked to the wunderkind producer about what to expect in the third season.
Marissa and Ryan finally did the deed. Why now?
It had been hanging out there a long time, like "have they ever done it?" It's been implied. Certainly Seth and Summer have had sex, Ryan and Theresa had sex, Luke and Marissa had sex. But Ryan and Marissa, we never actually saw that moment. And we felt like we owed it to them and to the fans for them to have finally let them consummate the relationship.
What's going to happen with Marissa at her new school?
It's going to be a little bit of a rough ride for Marissa. She's going to have to learn to adjust, she's going to meet some new people there that kind of befriend her.
So who are these new people?
She's going to meet a really kind of sweet, soulful surfer named Johnny Harper and his buddy Chili, who's kind of like the public school version of Seth, I guess you could say. And Johnny's girlfriend, Casey. And they're going to sort of form a mini-posse around Marissa to help protect her and help navigate the waters.
Will any of them cause problems for Ryan and Marissa?
The relationship with Marissa and Johnny will be complicated.
What's the deal with Charlotte (Jeri Ryan)? What's her agenda?
You'll start to find out [this] week.
Can you give us a hint?
She's not a lesbian, which I know is a [theory]. And she's not working with the Dean in some larger conspiracy.
Speaking of Dean Hess (Eric Mabius), what's his deal? He's too cute to be completely evil.
He's a young go-getter from the East Coast, very ambitious, looking to make his mark in the disciplinary world. He's been brought to Harbor for one specific reason, which is to quell the parents' anxiety.
Maybe the Dean and Julie Cooper can get together.
The Dean might already be spoken for.
Let's play the "Have we seen the last of…" game. Have we seen the last of... Jimmy Cooper?
[Sighs]. You know, I don't want to say never say never. But I think we've seen the last of Jimmy Cooper for a long long time.
Trey?
I sure hope not.
Theresa?
No. Sometime in the next twelve months you'll get a resolution on that story line.
Oliver?
Yes. You've forgotten someone. Caitlin. Haven't seen the last of Caitlin.
Will she back this year?
Maybe. She just might, all grown up.
What's it like writing for a fictional couple, Seth and Summer, who are played by a real-life couple?
It's not difficult for me, I'm sure it's much more challenging for them. Especially last year, when they were off with other partners. But I think this year, they're a pretty stable couple for awhile.
Stable in the O.C.? Shocking!
Stable in the O.C. Hard to believe, I know. But we wanted to have some stable ground.
What's your plan when the gang graduates? Will they all somehow end up going to Orange County U?
Yeah, OCU, we've joked about that. And then cried afterwards. I think we will come up with something a little more complicated in year 4 that we're all excited about and will start to reveal itself as we get toward the end of this year. They're all going to live in a hatch at the bottom of an island, listening to the Mamas and the Papas.
Tell us about how you choose the music for each show, and what are you listening to right now that you love?
I really like the new Death Cab. I like Rogue Wave a lot. Who else do I like right now? Youth Group. I just saw Interpol, that was great.
How do you feel about 'Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County'?
I love it. I'm so addicted. That Kristin is up to no good. Won't Stephen ever understand and get over her? And what's the deal with Jessica, could she be more co-dependent? I think it's funny.
Do you feel weird that it's the real version of your show?
And that it even plays Death Cab? I think it's fine, I think it's very flattering that people at MTV thought we tapped into a world that was big enough to warrant two shows. The funniest part is when people tell us they think our show is more realistic.
When's 'The Valley' coming to DVD?
We want to do an episode of 'The O.C.' that actually just is an episode of 'The Valley.' I don't know if we have the creative wherewithal to get that done.
